A new career for freelancers
In 2018, the number of freelancers who were working for the likes of Google, Facebook, Netflix and Apple rose to nearly 100 million, according to a new report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of freelance jobs created jumped to 2.4 million in 2018, according the BLS.
That’s up from a low point of about 2.1 million in 2017, according a BLS report released in August.
The number of total jobs created for freelancing, a term that includes freelancers working for clients, increased to 2 million in 2020.
That was down from a high of 3.4 billion in 2016.
Freelancers earn about 30 percent more than non-salaried employees and are also eligible for unemployment benefits.
But many freelancers aren’t paid enough to live on their own.
The median monthly income for freelancer was $17,500 in 2018.
