How to be a professional freelancer

Shah, who was recently hired as a freelancer by Bethesda Softworks, said he often felt like he was being punished for his hard work by the industry.
“It feels like the whole industry is treating me like crap, and it feels like I’m the only one who has a voice,” Shah said.
“They’re telling me that I’m too hardworking to be considered a freelancing person, and they’re telling my employer that I should just stop doing my work and just focus on writing.”
When they say this, it makes me feel really bad, because I think that they’re right, but they’re also being really selfish, and I don’t want to feel like they’re being mean.

For most freelancers, the reality of working in games is one of a constantly shifting schedule, with no regular breaks.
The job itself is stressful, and even when it does get done, it can feel like a slow process.
“The fact that it’s taking so long to do that game doesn’t feel good.
And if I have a deadline and I have to go back to my desk and I can’t make the deadline, I feel really sad,” said Shah.
While freelancers are able to find a lot of work in the game industry, it isn’t always a glamorous one.
In many cases, they don’t get paid at all.
They also have to deal with the stigma of being “game makers,” which makes them feel like outsiders.
“You know, I’m an artist, and we’re supposed to be making art,” said Khaled, who is currently working on a video-game project.
“I’m not a game designer.
If you’re a game developer, you’re supposed, like, to be building stuff.”
The reality is, most of the time, most game developers are not game designers, said Shah, who added that he has to keep in mind that most of his work is not finished, and that it can take months or years for a game to be finished.
Shahs work also involves working with the development teams.
“You’re kind of there as a consultant, but you’re also kind of a freelancers’ adviser, and you help out with everything,” he explained.
“Because they’re in the trenches, you have to keep up.”
Shahs time is precious and he feels like he is being treated like an outsider.
“It’s kind of hard to have a career, and the game developers know that,” he continued.
“I don’t think it’s a fair thing.
I think they should have been paying me, but that’s not the way things work.”
Shahi said that he wants to take back the word “game” from “game designer.”
“It doesn’t even feel like the word game anymore,” he added.
