How to deal with trolls
A group of artists have formed a website to address online abuse, with the goal of giving artists a place to report harassment and abuse online.
The group, called Anti-Harassment Inc. (AHH), is a volunteer-run website where members can report online harassment and share tips on how to deal and fight back.
“This is a safe space where people can report, share tips and share their experiences and the people in this space are just like anyone else who has been harassed or abused online,” the website’s founders, Daniel Dias and Dinesh Singh, told Al Jazeera.
The founders said they were inspired by the way in which their own parents dealt with online abuse in the past.
“As a young person growing up, it was incredibly easy to become the victim of online bullying and abuse, especially online,” Dias said.
“My parents did not have to be as vigilant in reporting their own abuse.”
But they said the online harassment they faced during the 1990s was not as easy to cope with.
“When you’re growing up and you’re being bullied, you don’t know who to trust, so there’s a lot of shame and guilt, you’re scared, you want to get away from it, but you don´t know how to do that,” Dios said.AHH started with just a few volunteers, who decided to form a group and expand to thousands of people.
They started with a Facebook group, which now has over 30,000 members.
The site allows users to upload pictures of themselves that are of themselves, of others and of a fictional character, and a photo of themselves with a fake ID.
The creators said they wanted to make it easier for artists to report abuse online, by giving them a place where they could share tips about how to handle online harassment.
“The problem is that we’re getting really little support from the government,” DIAS said.
“We are really struggling to understand why it’s happening, and we have to get that help from our government.”
Singh said the site was started because “we don’t want to have a one-size-fits-all model where the internet has become like a playground where you’re allowed to do what you want and people are allowed to be bullying other people”.
“The internet is not a playground, and it is not like a house where you can say, ‘I can do whatever I want, but I have to make sure I’m not making anyone feel uncomfortable’.”
The founders hope to expand the site to include other types of harassment, such as stalking and online abuse.
“If you’re a musician, artist, writer, journalist or journalist, you have a duty to report it, and if you don`t do that, then you will be subject to harassment,” Singh said.
The members of AHH said they plan to use their site to raise money for legal fees, help with the costs of legal advice and help people who have been abused to have their cases taken more seriously.
The platform is currently free for its users, but the founders plan to raise funds to fund the project.
The website’s main purpose is to provide people who are harassed with information about what to do about it, including advice on how best to report the abuse.
The project also aims to raise awareness about online abuse and to raise public awareness about the need to tackle online abuse at a global level.
