Which are the best jobs in the UK for freelance writing?
By Steve DallenRead moreA new survey of freelance writing jobs has found that the UK has some of the best opportunities for writers, but that there are many more jobs available in the US and elsewhere.
The survey of 500 people, commissioned by the British Writers’ Union, found that freelance writing was the fastest growing profession in the country and that its growth was due to the digital revolution.
“This survey shows that writers are finding it much easier to find work on platforms like Patreon, IndieGoGo and Patreon itself than they were even 10 years ago,” said the union’s head of recruitment, Richard Williams.

In the US, the largest source of new jobs is software development, where more than one in four new jobs are created every month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of software development jobs rose by nearly 15,000 in 2016, and more than 7,300 of those jobs were in the tech sector.
“We’re seeing an explosion of the freelance writing workforce,” said Joanna O’Connor, senior vice president of the Writers Guild of America.
“The more we have writers who want to put their name on the line, the more opportunities there are to find freelance work.”
